The Atlanta Falcons first joined the National Football League in 1965 and played their first game in 1966. The city of Atlanta acquired an NFL franchise as part of the competitive battle between the NFL and the upstart American Football League (AFL). Original Falcons’ owner Rankin Smith threatened to purchase an AFL franchise for Georgia’s capital city. Not wanting to lose a quickly growing market the NFL offered him entry into the more established league.
It’s been almost 50 years since the Atlanta Falcons played their first game, and although the team has a losing overall record for the history of their franchise, there have been some highlights. In 1969, the Falcons’ hosted a national broadcast of Monday Night Football from Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. In 1970, the team had their first winning record. The next franchise milestone came a few years later–in 1978 the Falcons not only made the playoffs for the first time but won their first playoff game, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 14-13. Atlanta would lose the following week to the mighty Dallas Cowboys, but it was still an accomplishment for the team to win in their first postseason appearance.
The Falcons had a nice run in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s but despite a winning team on the field there were few recognizable stars on the roster. Quarterback Steve Bartkowski was fairly well known but the biggest Falcons’ celebrity of the era was a very unlikely one: placekicker Tim Mazzetti. The Falcons literally signed Mazzetti away from a $50 a night bar tending job to join the team. That backstory combined with an impressive rookie season made him a highly popular national celebrity. The Falcons have never been a ‘flashy’ team–legendary cornerback Deion Sanders gave the team their first infusion of ‘flash’ and attracted a wide national audience for the first time.
In 1997, the team left aging Atlanta-Fulton County stadium for the newly built Georgia Dome. In their early days, the Falcons were the de facto home NFL team for the entire Southeast. By the late 1990’s that was no longer the case with NFL teams in Charlotte, Jacksonville and Nashville. While the Atlanta Braves still retain widespread regional support, the Falcons don’t have quite the high profile they did early on.
Falcons’ fans do get to watch the team on television often–they frequently appear on the regional network broadcasts. Die-hard fans can watch every game by subscribing to the ‘NFL League Pass’ package that offers every regular season telecast. The NFL’s digital offerings aren’t quite as robust. Fans can watch Falcons video highlights or listen to Atlanta Falcons radio live stream online. There is no official way to watch a Falcons football game on line, however.
